Skin disease

Light and skin

The skin is with a surface of 1.5 to 2 m2 meter the biggest human organ. It weighs 3.5 to 10 kg and makes up about 16 % of the body’s weight.

Particularly, the skin together with hair, nails, sweat and oil producing glands form the genetic and unique human appearance.

The skin fulfils a variety of tasks:

  • Sensory perception – touches, thermal stimulus and pain are perceived this way
  • Regulation of the water balance by way of sweating
  • Communication function by turning pale or blushing
  • Immune function in case of infectious diseases and allergies
  • Protective function as barrier to shield the internal body
  • Temperature regulation by constriction and dilatation of blood vessels

The skin consists of three big layers; each of them is subdivided into sub-layers:

  • Epidermis (outer skin)
  • Dermis (corium)
  • Hypodermis (subcutis)

The rate of reproduction of epidermal cells is to approx. 28 days. On the one hand, it is possible to draw from the skin conclusions on age, mood and race and, on the other hand, internal diseases can be detected.

A beautiful, smooth and clear skin does not only meet the popular ideal of beauty but is often a visible sign of health, composure and well-being. Since ancient times, the idea of beauty is connected with young, firm and immaculate skin. Cleopatra was one of the first who tried to slow the onset of senescence in the skin  with oil of lilies and ethereal essences. However, this ideal of beauty  is hardly reachable for more and more people.

Many people suffer from various skin diseases, for instance neurodermatitis and psoriasis.

DAVITA’s Light Therapy instruments of the SkinLite instrument family can be applied successfully to treat these diseases.
